Artwork by Carl Johann Steinhäuser
Carl Johann Steinhäuser worked mainly in Bremen, Weimar and Karlsruhe, where he worked as a university lecturer from 1863 until he died in 1879. The neoclassical artwork pays tribute to the friendship between Orestes and Pylades, two figures in Greek mythology. In contrast to his work 'Hermann and Dorothea' in the neighbouring palace garden, the group of figures in the botanical garden appears more austere. Perhaps this reflects the tense relationship between the men who set out to avenge the dastardly murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra. The explosiveness of the story hinted at here can hardly be surpassed, since the two are the parents of Orestes.
